The Tilion Brewing Story

Welcome to Tilion Brewing Company! Founded by Chris Larson, Ryan Seabright, and Scott Larson, Tilion is about having the right beer for the occasion. Whether it is to celebrate life, discuss the world around us, or work through a problem, beer has been an integral part of how we get together for most of our adult lives.

When Chris’ younger brother, Scott, decided to join the Army at the ripe young age of 35 (while the long running war in Afghanistan was going on), they were looking for ways to enjoy their limited time together before Scott deployed.

At this time, Scott had a Mr. Beer kit and had brewed a couple of batches of what could only loosely be called beer, in that it was yellow, carbonated, and probably contained alcohol.

While Scott was deployed, Chris became hooked on brewing beer and quickly graduated from starter kits to all grain brewing. Thanks to some help from the guys at the local homebrew supply store, Chris soon began creating his own recipes from scratch. The next thing we knew, he was geeking out over grain and hop profiles, playing with different yeast cultures and perfecting our recipes.

While all of this was going on, Chris couldn’t stop telling his long-time friend and future business partner, Ryan Seabright, all about his new obsession.

He even tried to convince Ryan that they needed to open a brewery together, but while he had tried (and enjoyed) the beer, Ryan wasn’t quite on board yet. Chris continued to try and convince Ryan for several months that they could actually make a living by following their passion.

During the summer of 2012, they decided to brew some beer together for the first time for a long-standing annual “guy’s” fishing trip up north.

The beer for their fishing trip needed to be something that was session strength so they could fish responsibly, but had enough flavor to keep it interesting.

As Ryan and Chris were going through the recipe creation process, they started talking about their favorite craft beers that had gotten them interested in craft beer in the first place. The end result was our “Lake Andrew unCommon”, which found its inspiration from California Common Steam Ales.

The beer was perfect for a hot August afternoon and, as far as we can recall, it was one of our best years of fishing.

What better way to celebrate a fishing tradition and the Minnesota way of life than being on the lake with a delicious and refreshing beer! We like to attribute Ryan’s decision to open a brewery with Chris to that beer and its namesake lake, as the brewery has been in planning ever since.
